課程概述

An introductory course on the history of Japanese and Korean popular songs since 1945. It focuses more on Japanese history, but it will also explore cultural exchanges between the countries and related issues as a step toward further discussion about Taiwanese history in a comparative perspective.

課程目標
The main purpose of this course is to introduce popular hits and social contexts in a chronological order, familiarize students with actual sounds, and enable them to reflect upon the Taiwanese situation in an auditory manner. The instructor will share sound clips and provide song texts and notations whenever necessary. Further readings and materials available in Japanese and Korean will be introduced to interested students.
課程要求
Language Proficiency:
Throughout the course, several main textbooks written in Japanese and Korean will be consistently consulted. Therefore, the ability to read either Japanese or Korean materials is preferred but not required. The instructor will encourage students to understand the historical processes with translations and audio-visual materials. Students are expected to be active in learning these languages.

Assignments:
1. At least quarter to half page weekly response notes on listening examples. Due by Tuesday 10pm by email. Examples to be handed in advance (basically one week before the next lecture through TA or online). Students are expected to listen to the sound clips carefully before the class so as to participate actively in class discussion. (Only from Week 3 on)
2. Class presentation at the end of the semester. Please come to see me or let me know via email by the end of this year to clarify a topic.
3. 5 - 10-page term paper based on class presentation. Due by 1/13 by email or by hand.

Evaluation:
